2021 Read A Louds
We love read a louds! They are an important part of our homeschool and we're always looking for the next great book! Please share your favorites with us!!
1: Can You Survive The Wilderness
This book is interactive. The kids got to pick which direction the book takes. They loved the book and worked together to decide which choice to make, and they did well! We only died in the wilderness once! 🤣 This book was a fun read, you get 3 different Wilderness experiences. The kids gave it: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
2: The Secret Soldier The Story of Deborah Sampson
A quick look into the life of Deborah Sampson, a women who served in the Revolutionary War by pretending to be a teenage boy. It was interesting to learn details of her life, but the book was put together oddly. It was short and had so many details it felt more like the cliff notes of her life then an actual story.
The kids give it: ⭐⭐⭐
3: Ramona Quimby and Her Mother
We love to listen to audios on hoopla while in the car. Over the last few months we have listened to the Henry Huggins series and now we are.working our way through the Ramona series. Its fun and makes us all laugh, but also deals with some tough real life situations. Ramona is a mischievous girl who is easy to love!
Kids give it: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Kids give it: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
5: The Hardy Boys Adventures Secrets of The Red Arrow by Franklin W. Dixo
Another car audio book. The Hardy Boys aren't suppose to be investigating anymore, but when a local crim ring starts attacking their classmates they have to get to the bottom of it. This book was definitely entertaining! My youngest 2 (ages 7 and 5) struggled with the intensity of it at times. We took several short breaks and listened to some music in-between audio sessions. I personally found it fun to listen to but would suggest it for the 9 and up crowd.
6. The Wingfeather Saga
On The Edge of The Dark Sea of Darkness
By: Andrew Peterson
This is a fantastic read a loud! Its on audible if you want to sit by the window with hot coco and watch the ice come down while listening.
Its a fantasy and has some unusual characters, so the beginning takes a tad to get use to. But. BUT once you've getting that hang of it it's a fantastic read!
3 siblings who live with their mother and grandfather find themselves in trouble and adventure. They learn some surprising facts about who they are and learn that they are capable of much more then they thought they would be.
Written by a Christian author there are beautiful undertones of the Christian life. Beliefe in a higher power, right vs. wrong, good vs. evil, growing up and becoming less self centered and more others centered. It has a very Green Ember feel to.
7. The War That Saved My Life
By: Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
We read this book for our Read-a-Loud book club that we host. Our book club was a monthly event, prior to covid, that all the kids seemed to love! We are excited to get back to it after missing it for a while year! We normally have a house full of children and moms. We eat food and talk about the book as a whole group! I usually try to make food pulled from the book if I can!
This book deals with some heavy issues. War, abuse, physical struggles, PTSD, depression and death. It also has beautiful redemptive qualities like love, kindness, sacrifice, hospitality personal growth and bravery.
The Story is written through the perspective of the main character, Ada. She has lived most her life with a club foot and a physically and mentally abusive mother. When WWII hits London the kids are evacuated. The readers get an inside glimpse at Adam thoughts as she learns to trust others and becomes healthy.
Because of the heavy nature of this book, it's my opinion that it's suited for older kids (8+).
