A Life of Service

Service.  Its defined as the act of helping or doing work for someone.

We thank our military, our police officers, firemen and health care workers for their service . We are grateful that they are there when we need them to keep us safe, to help us heal and protect us. And yes, to even lay down their lives so we can live as we please. It is considered a beautiful sacrifice to work a job that serves others. Unless ofcourse you are *just* a wife and a mom serving her husband and children. Then the service is seen as a wast of time, a wast of education, a wast of possibilities, a wast of her life. But this view of motherhood isn't biblical. The Lord sees a wife as more precious than a rare stone. He sees motherhood as a beautiful piece of his perfect plan in creation.

As Christian's we are to take up our cross and follow Jesus. He has a plan for our life. A life plan filled with an abundance of service to others and ultimately to him. But what if our cross, our life of service isn't giving our life on a battle field or running into a burning building. What if it's not one of healing the sick or catching the bad guy. What if he called us to serve him by washing our husbands socks (after picking them up off the floor next to the laundry basket). What of Jesus has called us to a life of service by closing the cabinet doors every morning after he left them open. What if our life of service consists of meal planning, and laundry folding. Of training and teaching lessons to little ones and teenaged ones. Of scrubbing toilets and kissing booboos and making sure they actually did brush their teeth! What if our life of service is to pray consistently for the people that we love (and the ones we are trying to love).

Not all service looks the same. Not all service wins accolades here on earth. But serving, truly serving our family, is just as important as those who spend their years protecting our country. We may feel over looked and under appreciated. We may not hear them thank us for the dinner or for driving them to class. At the end of 40 years of service we may not receive a gold watch and a pat on the back. But the Lord sees all that we do. He goes everywhere we go. He wants to know that the life he has called us to, what ever that is, is used for his glory. We shape the generations to come by greatfuly and joyfully washing our husbands laundry.  We leave a legacy of faith and love for our future family members, the ones we will never get to meet, by praying over their lives. When we keep our cool with those rambunctious children instead of losing our temper, we shape who they become. When we invest our lives, our time, into our family we are doing kingdom work!

So mama. Sweet, tried, overworked mama. Keep going. Keep serving your family. And smile while you do it. Have confidence in knowing that the work you do today, although seems small and insignificant to the world, is huge in the kingdom of the Lord.

Lord Jesus,
I pray now for the sweet tired wife and mama who reads this. I pray that you will give her peace and confidence that can only come from you. Let her not grow weary in doing your good work, but help her to stay steadfast in her service.  Give her your wisdom for her life and service.
In Jesus's precious and holy name I pray.
Amen.
