These Days

These are the days. The days I'll look back on and love to remember.  These are the days that I never even realized I wanted.

These are the days of a big family in a small house. Its nothing fancy, with its uneven floors and crooked doors. It's hard to keep warm, this old house. The bitter wind seeps through the old window pains on these short winter days. But its what God has given us for this season. So, these days I do my best to balance homemaking and life making; too much of one means not nearly enough of the other.

These are the days of ever growing children. These days they out grow pants and shoes and jackets. They out grow toys and board games, and the cartoons they once loved. Just like the flowers in spring, the growing cannot be stopped or even slowed a little. But, I'm learning to love the growth and embrace the out-growing that these days bring.

These are the days of relaxed homeschooling lessons. Long days spent playing outside in the warm sun. These are the days of a toothless kindergartner learning to read. She wears her tu-tu and a sweet little lisp to the school room table. These are the days of a boy learning what it means to be a man. Self control and chivalry.  Opening doors and always being last to get his ice cream because, these days, his sisters go first.

These are the days of ever change. One day is never like the other. Like the colors the autumn trees wear, the children are ever changing. From new spring- green to beautiful bold colors only God could dream up. The school lessons grow harder, the life lesson grow harder still. Gone are the days of kissing a boo-boo away. But these are the days of deep conversations. Of true wisdom learned that no curriculum can teach. These are the days of letting go, like the autumn leaves just before the winter arrives. Just like the leaves the children will fly. They will fall a little and float a little. But the roots remain stead fast.

These are the days that make up a life. A life time of one-day-at-a-time, turns into a legacy that allows the next generation to experiance these days.
